I have a 96 Jeep and am getting unreasonably low gas mileage. Why?
I’m getting about 13 mpg and I’m a very relaxed driver. The Jeep is a Cherokee Sport, has 150k on it, with the I6 HO motor and Auto tranny. I just bought the Jeep because Wisconsin winters don’t like Camaros and I love how it goes anywhere, but hate the gas mileage. I’ve read online people are getting close to 20 with it and maybe 21 all highway, but I get 12-13. I’m at school so I don’t have the tools or a garage to check much but I don’t know where to start? Air filter needs changed, but thats only worth 1 mpg or so, maybe diff. fluid needs changed? trans fluid flushed? Tires are full of air. Plugs and wires checked next?
The Jeep’s in-line 6 cylinder engine was never great for gas mileage. Add the fact that your car is a relatively heavy 4X4 with an automatic trans, and it probably needs a complete tune-up, and you are getting about average fuel mileage for your make and model car. The people who are telling you they are getting 20 MPG are either padding their numbers, or they are driving a 2wd car with a 4-cylinder engine.
