HVAC Question–Rheem furnace- can stock mesh filter be replaced with pleated HEPA type filter?
I have a Rheem Classic 90 furnace that was installed several years ago. It came stock with a re-usable plastic fine mesh filter that I remove and clean every few months. It seems to me that a paper HEPA type filter would do a much better job of filtering the air. The stock plastic mesh filter seems like its too much of an open weave to be really effective with dust and other allergens (we have pets). My question is: Can I replace the stock plastic mesh filter with a pleated paper type filter and not severely effect the airflow or performance of the furnace? What thickness filter would be an appropriate replacement?
Absolutely, replace it with a pleated one, just keep it changed every month or two. Dont believe the label that says they are a three month filter, this only holds true to a dust free house. The mesh filters are not any good stop very little dust from going through. Anything you can pour salt through is not a good filter.
